Delivering a database
We will deliver the executable files making up of your database and install them on
your computer and we will also give you the source code that generated the program.
Having the source code provides you with the long-term security of owning the system
that we have developed for you. We have every intention of staying in this business but
you need the security of having the source code so that you can turn to somebody else
should anything unforeseen happen. Without this source code you would be unable to
extend the system or fix any faults as they arise.
We follow Microsoft's convention for program names and the program code will be
well-commented as an aid to future developers. If necessary we can provide full
documentation for users or developers but most of our databases are small enough to be
self-explanatory. We can also deliver various levels of
support
over the life of the system. This support ranges from advice over the phone as you make
your own changes to a complete service delivering any alterations you require.
Copyright and Licenses
You will own the software once you have paid for it in full and you
will be free to make as many copies as you need for your users to
run on as many PCs as necessary. If you are using Microsoft Access then you will need
an appropriate copy of Access on each PC. FoxPro systems are delivered as an executable
program with all the files needed to run the database on any suitable Windows PC. There
are no licence fees and FoxPro is a good choice if you need complete flexibility.
Although you as the client own the code that we produce for you, we retain copyright
in it and you will not be able to sell copies of the program to third parties. We also
retain the right to reuse any of the components that we have included in your system.
Many of these, for example a login screen, are part of our standard library and have
been used many times before. This level of reuse speeds development and gives us
confidence that these components have been thoroughly tested.
